ADHD & Executive Function Skills

"I know what I am supposed to do...I just don't do it."
"I know what they want me to do...I just can't seem to get myself motivated to do it".

Sound familiar? Please keep reading to understand why this happens....

If you, or someone that you care about, has ADHD, this is likely a very familiar (and incredibly frustrating) part of your lives. It's frustrating for those with ADHD, and it's frustrating for those who care about them. It's very important to realize, however, that ADHD is not just about having difficulties with paying attention or having too much energy. ADHD impacts the brain's executive system and it's associated executive function skills.

Weaknesses in executive function skills contribute to many of the symptoms of ADHD such as distractibility, forgetfulness, inconsistency, and impulsivity. And, it's these weaknesses in executive function that make it difficult for those with ADHD to get things done.

So, why is this important?

It's important because, if we can approach ADHD from the perspective of challenges in executive function, we can begin to understand why traditional time management and organizational strategies don't work so well in ADHD. And, more importantly, we can begin to create systems, structures, and strategies that DO work for those with ADHD.

If you are reading this and you have ADHD, I want you to know that there are very specific things that can be done to make life with ADHD easier, and less stressful. Or, if you are reading this and have someone in your life that you care about who has ADHD, please know that thinking that he/she simply needs to try harder or to apply him/herself more, is never the answer. Whether you have ADHD or someone else in your life does, the key to thriving with ADHD is creating systems and structures that support the brain's executive system.

At Positively ADHD, we are committed to improving the lives of those impacted by challenges in executive function skills. We understand that well developed executive function skills lay the foundation for success in school, work, and life.
